What is Affordable Housing?

Affordable housing is housing where a household pays less than 30% of their monthly income to secure it. This includes gross housing costs, such as utility costs.

In general, most governmental housing assistance programs are at the state or local level. Eligibility is based on the median household income for the area. For example, in Oregon, a low-income household is one that earns no more than 80% of the area median income.

New Mexico has many affordable housing options, including MFA, housing authorities, public housing, and supportive housing. The discussion ranged from a lack of affordable single-family homes to low-income housing, options for the disabled and the homeless.

The purpose of the Uniform Owner-Resident Relations Act [47-8-1 NMSA 1978] is to simplify, clarify, modernize and revise the law governing the rental of dwelling units and the rights and obligations of owner and resident, and to encourage the owners and the residents to maintain and improve the quality of housing >> UORRA NM: New Mexico Uniform Owner Resident Relations Act (every renter should receive a copy of this act when a lease is signed, from a management company and/or the property owner)
